After an Abs Wax: 48-Hour Do's and Don'ts for Men aftercare guide image

The single most important rule after an Abs Wax is this: keep heat and sweat off the area for the first 48 hours. Our Abs Wax is a $35 service designed to leave your abdominal skin smooth and clean, but freshly waxed skin is a little reactive at first. In San Diego, that usually means being extra careful with sun, workouts, and the temptation to squeeze in a quick beach walk right after.

If you follow the next few steps, you’ll usually avoid the common issues I see after mens waxing: redness that lingers, small bumps triggered by friction, and that itchy feeling that shows up when sweat gets trapped under a tight shirt.

Your first 24 to 48 hours after an Abs Wax: keep it cool, clean, and loose

Think of the first two days as a calm-down window. Waxing removes hair from the root, so the follicles are temporarily open and more likely to get irritated by heat, bacteria, and rubbing.

48-hour don’ts: skip heavy exercise, saunas, hot tubs, hot baths, and anything that makes you sweat a lot. Hold off on ocean or pool swims. Avoid direct sun on the freshly waxed area.

Showering after waxing (yes, you can)

A gentle shower is fine. I recommend lukewarm water, a mild soap, and your hands only. No washcloth scrubbing, no gritty body wash, and no exfoliating gloves for at least 48 to 72 hours. When you’re done, pat dry. Rubbing the towel back and forth is a sneaky way to trigger bumps.

Clothing and friction: the part most guys underestimate

For the first two days, wear a looser, breathable shirt. Cotton is great. Moisture-wicking fabric is fine too as long as it isn’t compressive. Tight athletic tops plus sweat are a common reason the skin gets bumpy after a wax, especially if you’re working a long hospitality shift downtown or heading out in the Gaslamp Quarter and you know you’ll be warm for hours.

Days 3 to 7: how to prevent ingrowns without overdoing it

Once you’re past the initial 48 hours, your goal changes. Now it’s about keeping skin calm while helping new growth come through cleanly. Most irritation in the first week comes from two things: too much friction (shirts, backpacks, gym benches) and aggressive products too soon.

My simple rule: if the skin still feels tender, treat it like it’s tender. Wait an extra day before you exfoliate or add anything “active.”

Sun in San Diego is the big wildcard

San Diego sun hits hard year-round, and freshly waxed skin can react faster than you expect. For the first week, try not to bake the area in direct sun. If you’re planning a waterfront walk, a beach day, or even a sunset harbor stroll, cover up with a breathable shirt. After the first 48 hours, you can use sunscreen on the area if you’re going to be exposed.

When it’s okay to start gentle exfoliation

After 48 to 72 hours, you can start very gentle exfoliation a couple times a week. Keep it mild. Think soft washcloth pressure, not sanding. If you tend to get ingrowns, this is also the window where a targeted ingrown-hair serum can help, but only if your skin looks calm and you’re not still red or tender.

The only products I recommend right after mens waxing (and what to avoid)

Right after an Abs Wax, less is better. I stick with simple, fragrance-free options that calm skin without clogging pores.

Good choices (first 48 hours):

  • Fragrance-free soothing gel (aloe vera or hyaluronic-based)
  • Light, non-comedogenic moisturizer
  • Cool compress for a few minutes if you feel heat or sensitivity

Avoid right after waxing:

  • Alcohol-based products and heavily fragranced lotions
  • Body sprays and colognes applied on the waxed area
  • Oily balms that feel heavy on the skin
  • Exfoliating acids until your skin has fully calmed down

If you’re the type who likes a routine, keep it simple: gentle cleanse, pat dry, thin layer of soothing gel. That’s it for the first two days.

Redness, bumps, and “is this normal?” When to reach out to me

Mild redness and a warm feeling right after waxing is normal. Small bumps can happen too, especially if you sweated, wore a tight shirt, or touched the area a lot in the first day.

Usually normal: light redness for a day, mild sensitivity, a few tiny bumps that calm down once you stop friction and heat.

Reach out for guidance: irritation, redness, or bumps that last beyond 72 hours, or anything that feels like it’s getting worse instead of better.

I’d rather you ask early than try to scrub it off or treat it with random products from the cabinet. That’s how irritation turns into a longer problem.

If you’re planning another service, I also keep mens waxing appointments easy to fit into a day downtown. We’re in San Diego with quick access if you’re coming in from Coronado, Point Loma, Hillcrest, Little Italy, or Pacific Beach.
